April 2010
Hello everyone!
I wanted to let everyone know that...WE HIT OUR GOAL!! We have raised
$76,655 for Heroes this year and money is still coming in! Not only
that, but our community has also raised over $70,000 for the Haiti
Relief effort bring the grand total of fundraising efforts to almost
$150,000! That's amazing! We can't thank our community enough for the
generosity people have for our local neighbors as well as our
international ones.
THANK YOU EVERYONE for your hard work in helping us reach our goal! We
could not have done it without you. If you missed the luncheon today,
Bob and I will be making deliveries next week with thank you gifts for
helping us with another successful Heroes Campaign.
Thanks again for everything!

February 10, 2010
Dear TAA Members,
I am writing with enthusiastic anticipation about the Tippecanoe
Apartment Association’s (TAA) support of the annual American Red Cross
Heroes campaign that is set to run the entire month of March. The TAA
partnered with the Tippecanoe County chapter of the American Red Cross
in the fall of 2008 and last year was our first attempt at sponsoring
the Heroes campaign which is their primary fundraising initiative. We
are a little wiser going into our second year and are optimistic that
the TAA can meet our impactful goal of raising at least $10,000 for this
meaningful organization.
As an active member of the TAA we ask that you please read through the
following literature carefully to gain a better understanding of the
many areas in which your efforts will help have a positive impact on our
local community. All proceeds that are raised during this event go to
support area families and initiatives.
Our goal during this second year of support is to raise over $10,000 for
the Heroes campaign. This may seem like a large number during these
tough economic times, but if everyone does their part, we will easily
meet this goal. We have approximately 9,000 apartment homes in the TAA,
many with two, three and four bedrooms and we have access to hundreds of
people beyond our walls and businesses.
If each resident and customer chipped in $1 we would well exceed our
cumulative goal. Many property and business owners have agreed to match
a dollar-for-dollar contribution that their tenants and clients
contribute which would also push us well beyond our goal.
On behalf of the TAA board and the American Red Cross, thank you for
your support of such a worthy cause as the Heroes Campaign. We look
forward to working together to make March a great month for our
community!!! Please feel free to contact anyone on the TAA board or Liz
Wallace (742-6975 ext, 2217 or
Liz@lafayetteredcross.org ) from the Red
Cross with questions.
Sincerely,
John G. Pfleeger
President, TAA

H1N1 (Swine) Flu
Update
Swine Flu,
we’re alerting our contacts on ways to prevent and counteract
the spread of the virus. Please print and post the attachment at
your place of work or business.
The following message is from Chris Hrouda,
Executive Vice President, and Richard J. Benjamin, M.D., Chief
Medical Officer:
The World Health Organization (WHO) has elevated its alert
status for the H1N1 Flu (swine flu) outbreak to Level 4,
indicating its belief that this disease has demonstrated limited
human-to-human spread and has the potential to become a
pandemic. In addition, the U.S. federal government has declared
a precautionary public health emergency. To date, H1N1 Flu
infections in the U.S. have been localized and non-fatal.
The WHO and U.S. government declarations correspond to the
“preparation” phase in the American Red Cross pandemic plan. At
this time the American Red Cross is urging all staff, donors and
sponsors to take heightened seasonal flu precautions:
* Utilize cough and sneeze etiquette by covering your mouth and
nose
* Frequently wash your hands or use alcohol-based cleansers
* Reduce close person-to-person contact
* Stay home if feeling unwell
* Contact your physician with any flu-like symptoms
The H1N1 Influenza is a contagious respiratory disease that
affects pigs and is caused by a type-A influenza virus.
Outbreaks in pigs occur year-round. The current strain is a new
variation of an H1N1 virus, which is a mix of human and animal
versions. When the flu spreads person-to-person, instead of from
animals to humans, it can continue to mutate, making it harder
to treat or fight off because people have no natural immunity.
The symptoms of this H1N1 Flu outbreak, which are similar to the
common flu, include fever, lethargy, appetite loss, coughing,
runny nose, sore throat, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. The
virus spreads when an infected person coughs or sneezes around
another person. People can become infected by touching something
with the flu virus on it and then touching their mouth, nose or
eyes.
